Although the name indicates that this type of health care is "alternative" the truth in real life is that it alternative medicine or alternative treatments are usually used along with other modern medicinal treatments and procedures.
Naturally, it would be unheard of to treat a stroke or heart attack with any of the current alternative treatments. Such serious medical emergencies or illnesses such as heart disease require the wonders of modern medicine to quickly and effectively treat the condition.
The strongest case for alternative medicine can be made in less serious conditions or as preventive medicine for certain types of illness. Alternative medicine or alternative treatments are normally used over time in conjunction with proper diet and exercise as a means to promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce or sometimes eliminate the chances of more serious illness developing.
Alternative health care can be compared to routine auto maintenance. Automobile owners need to make sure that their cars have enough oil, gas, air in the tires, brake pads, etc. In doing so they will prevent more serious breakdowns from happening.
The same applies to the human body. If you do not put the right type of fuel or nutrients into your body you run the risk of developing serious illness over time. Many serious disease such as cancer, heart disease and obesity can be avoided through proper care and maintenance of your body.
Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine consists of medicines that are usually available at health food stores or over the counter without the need for prescriptions although some alternative medicines will require a prescription.
Many alternative medicines are actually not that "alternative" at all. Most synthetic medicines are derived from natural products, many of which come from plants. Many pharmaceutical companies do not invest time and resources in natural medicine because they are unable to copyright naturally occurring treatments. Instead they develop synthetic compounds that try and imitate products found in nature.
In most cases the medicine will be stronger and work faster however there are often serious side effects as the body can easily tell the difference between natural and synthetic and natural medicines.
Although natural medicines and herbs may take longer to provide cure and/or relief from conditions there are usually little to no side effects. Still however, taking too much of any medicine natural or otherwise can be harmful. You should always consult a physicial before applying any self treatments.
Some common natural alternative medicines include tea tree oil for insect bites and irritated skin, chamomile tea for help sleeping and marijuana for pain relief and a host of mental illness.
